NLS-Glossary

Black body

is a hypothetical (an ideal) body that absorbs all the electromagnetic radiation falling onto it and therefore appears to be black at all wavelengths.

When heated, a black body emits the maximum possible radiation at that temperature. A small hole in the wall of a cavity maintained at a uniform temperature emits radiation that approximately corresponds to that from a black body.

Black body radiation

is the distribution of radiation energy as a function of wavelengths emerging from a hot black body such as a small hole in a cavity. The maximum amount of radiation intensity that can be emitted by an object is called the black body radiation. Although, in general, the radiated intensity depends on the material's surface, a radiation emitted from a cavity with a small aperture is independent of the material of the cavity and corresponds very closely to black body radiation. Spectral irradiance Iλ is the emitted radiation intensity (power per unit area) per unit wavelength so that I𝜆 d𝜆 is the intensity in a small range of wavelengths, d𝜆 Planck’s black body radiation law describes the wavelength dependence of 𝐼𝜆=2πhc2𝜆5 exphc𝜆kT1  where k is the Boltzmann constant, T is the temperature (Kelvins), h is the Planck constant, c is the speed of light.

Black Mark

Sensor mark usually printed on the reverse (non-printing) side of tag stock, or on the liner (backing paper) of label stock.

Blind zone

Synonyms :
Blind Spot

Area between the active surface and minimum switching distance within which a target cannot be detected. within which correct functioning of the sensor cannot be assured.

Blue Shift of Bandpass

This form calculates the shift in the blue (smaller wavelength) direction, which happens if a dielectrical filter is reached by the light at angles other than one it's designed for. For example the filter is designed for incident at an angle of 0 degrees, but is reached at 18 degrees.
