NLS-Glossary

Data Terminal Equipment (DTE)

Hardware interface standard for display stations, personal computers, printers and other non-communications equipment. To interface a DTE printer with a DTE device such as a PC or a display station, a null-modem serial cable is required.

DC_AC Switching sensors

is a sensor which can be operated with either DC or AC current.

Decibel

Decibel is a logarithmic unit of power gain defined as dB = 10log(Pout/Pin) where P is the power. It can be used to describe voltage gain as well in which case dB =   20log(Vout/Vin) where V is the voltage.
Similarly it can also describe a current gain by dB = 20log(Iout/Iin) where I is the current.

Decoder

An electronic device which translates the electrical signals from a scanner into computer compatible data. The decoder performs checks on the electronic signal to validate it, and processes the signal through a decode algorithm designed to detect errors in the signal. The output of the decoder may drive a keyboard input to a terminal or may interface with a communications port on a computer.

Default check digit / Barcode

which check digit method is used by default for the barcode symbology in question. For 2D codes check digits are not applicable, these codes are using an error correction scheme.

Deformation of the pulse shape

when considering fiber laser architectures with high gain multiple stage configurations, the active fiber gain depends on the dopant population inversion levels. These levels reduce over the pulse duration.
